The Challenge
Select a public domain novel and conceptualize an original, transformative title sequence for a streaming series adaptation. The sequence should effectively encapsulate the novel’s tone, themes, and aesthetic style while reinterpreting its narrative for a contemporary audience.
My Process
Research
I knew that I wanted to ground my concept to the original text, for this, I referenced a paperback edition of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, drawing inspiration from its language, themes, and atmosphere.
I began my process by analyzing title sequences with similar thematic and stylistic elements. I drew inspiration from sequences such as Edward Scissorhands (1990), AHS: Cult (2017), Se7en (1995), Sinister (2012), Mama (2013), and Dexter: Original Sin (2024).
Additionally, I researched previous title sequences from adaptations and spin-offs within the Frankenstein universe. Identifying recurring visual and tonal motifs helped me understand effective genre-establishing techniques, which in turn informed my design decisions.
Understand
The horror genre frequently employs distinct visual, audio, and cinematic techniques that contribute to a cohesive and immersive atmosphere. Through my research, I identified recurring elements that effectively establish tone and genre in title sequences. Common visual motifs include grainy, distressed film textures, flickering effects, unsettling imagery, and depictions of violence, destruction, blood, and death.
Sound design plays a crucial role in shaping the psychological impact of these sequences. Strong audio elements enhance the atmosphere, with music often serving as an underscore that reinforces visual motifs. These compositions evoke unsettling emotions such as fear, shock, disgust, and anxiety, heightening the viewer’s sense of dread and anticipation.

Ideation
I envision a horror-themed title sequence composed of layered film clips enhanced with multiple overlays and effects. To reinforce the thematic and atmospheric depth, I will incorporate key visual motifs, including graveyards, rolling fog, nighttime settings, flashes of lightning, and a full moon. Elements of science and experimentation—such as medical instruments, bubbling beakers, a shadowy laboratory, and surgical procedures—will further establish the film’s unsettling tone.
Underlying motifs of transformation and the grotesque will be represented through deformed laboratory specimens, the distorted form of a humanoid figure, and a partial face reveal of Frankenstein’s creature obscured behind fogged glass. These carefully curated visuals serve to immerse the viewer in the genre, setting the stage for the eerie and unsettling narrative to unfold.
Design
Building on my research and conceptual development, I focused on executing a visually and aurally immersive title sequence that effectively conveys the essence of Frankenstein. The design incorporates grainy, distressed textures, flickering effects, and unsettling imagery to establish a haunting atmosphere. Layered overlays and complex lighting emphasize the eerie, fragmented nature of the narrative, while recurring motifs such as graveyards, fog, lightning, medical instruments, specimen jars, and a deformed humanoid figure reinforce the film’s thematic core.
Sound design plays a crucial role in elevating the sequence’s emotional impact. A carefully curated audio composition—featuring an unsettling underscore, ambient distortions, and abrupt sonic disruptions—intensifies feelings of fear, anxiety, and unease. Motion design techniques, including slow reveals, time warping, glitching effects, and erratic transitions, enhance the psychological tension and disorientation.
Through a meticulous balance of visual and auditory elements, the final design immerses viewers in the dark, gothic world of Frankenstein, setting the stage for the narrative while maintaining a transformative and modernized interpretation of the classic novel.
